The story of MOTH Metier
MOTH Metier is a journey of transformation. Many years ago I was faced with the sudden and tragic loss of my older brother. Anyone who knew him felt a deep and painful loss. While there was some consolation in knowing I wasn't alone in my grief, I found myself in a dark place for a long time. I had so much sadness and hopelessness I could not see past this wall of terrible thoughts. I eventually realized that my life needed to get better if it was going to carry on - something had to change.
I recalled a short journal entry of my brother's, where he described having a challenging day at work and was feeling very upset. He decided to focus his anger and frustration on the heavy bag in his basement. He continued, writing how he had taken his negative energy and channeled it into something positive leaving him feeling healthier and happier in the end. I thought to myself, I can try that!
I turned to my creative side as an outlet for my grief. Anytime I found myself stuck in that dark place, I forced myself to do make something; a small painting, a sketch, a tile mosaic. I was beginning to find little moments of happiness here and there, I was getting to a better place. One day I started twisting the silhouette of a tree out of wire, then more trees, then a flower. When I looked at that flower I was surprised, from this dark and hopeless place, I had created a very pretty flower. I thought to myself, there was still something good in me, looking for expression. One day someone commented they'd like to wear one of my creations, "Can you make this into earrings?"... and so it began. There was something about making jewellery I instantly connected with, and I found myself lost in it for hours at a time. It became my sanctuary, and each piece, a testament to resilience and the enduring power of the human spirit.
Inspired by the symbolism of the moth—a harbinger of transformation—and the acronym for Mending Of The Heart, MOTH Metier embodies the essence of renewal and rediscovery. Through my creations, I strive to impart a message of hope and resilience, reminding others that even in life's darkest moments, beauty and light await those who choose to seek it.
Love,
